'bout time

Jan 20 2010

Finally took the time to put my personal page back up. I used to be over at slicehost running a wordpress blog, with a couple rails projects set up. One day, nginx went up in smoke on me, and to be honest I didn’t really feel like figuring it out.

Around this time I was trying out the webbynode readystack stuff, and eventually switched my stuff over. Mainly just to get my email running again. That was… months ago.

I’d been meaning to get something other than “It works!” on here for quite awhile, but I didn’t want to do another wordpress install since I haven’t done any significant php work in over a year, and I would inevitably want to hack something together. I also wasn’t thrilled with the rails blogging apps - enki is what I had planned to go with, as it was pretty simple and well coded.

But I wanted something borderline static site - no need to handle comments (disqus can handle that - no fancy template systems - I can fiddle with the code myself - multiple users is pointless, which means authentication is close to it. Enter scanty.

Almost exactly what I was really looking for, and it was small and simple enough that it’s extremely simple to change the code to get exactly what I want.

I’ve also made the discovery that I have no desire to fiddle with any type of sysadmin stuff - even the really simple things like setting up virtual hosts. heroku to the rescue. Damn near one click deployment, essentially free (I don’t expect to get much traffic here), and I don’t have to worry about anything server related.
